Insiders: a printer’s perspective – John Hutcheson

May 15, 2014 by tylercollection

As curators we have a tendency to focus on the artwork, the finished product; however this is only ever part of the equation. The technical nature of printmaking often necessitates collaboration and team work in order to successfully execute a print. Indeed, the prodigious output of the Tyler workshops was reliant on the efforts of a dedicated and hard-working team of talented printers and staff, a fact which we have endeavoured to reflect on the Team page of our website. The […]

The prints of Anni Albers: line involvements

April 17, 2014 by tylercollection

Julia Greenstreet, Curatorial Assistant, Kenneth Tyler Collection, reflects on the prints of Anni Albers – one of the 20th century’s most influential textile artists and a brilliant printmaker. Anni Albers (1899 – 1994) began her career as a weaver and only turned to printmaking when she was in her sixties. At the core of both her textiles and prints are a set of fundamental principles established during her years at the Bauhaus Weaving Workshop which guide her creative process […]

Ken Tyler and Marabeth Cohen-Tyler’s visit to the National Gallery of Australia in July last year presented a significant opportunity to learn more about Roy Lichtenstein and his print projects direct from Tyler, the master printer with whom he had a long and fruitful collaboration. Happy New Year!

January 15, 2014 by tylercollection

We can hardly believe that 2014 has arrived! Team Tyler had a wonderfully busy, productive year in 2013. Roy Lichtenstein: Pop remix travelled to the red centre of Australia, opening at Araluen Arts Centre, Alice Springs in April. In an emphatic end to its successful national tour, the exhibition returned to the National Gallery of Australia in July, where it has been on display since. The opening night – a buzzing, Pop-inspired party with vodka POPtails, WHAAM burgers, and Ray […]

Anthony Caro, 1924-2013

October 25, 2013 by tylercollection

It is with regret that we report the death of Anthony Caro, who passed away on October 23 at the age of 89. Caro was one of the great modernist sculptors; an artist whose explorations of space, form and materials continued throughout his distinguished career. Caro was best known for his abstract sculptures in steel and other metals. Duccio variations no.7 – a generous donation to the American Friends of the National Gallery of Australia by Ken and Marabeth Tyler […]

Remembering Walasse Ting

August 28, 2013 by tylercollection

In 1964 Roy Lichtenstein was joined by 27 of his contemporaries in contributing lithographic illustrations to One Cent Life, a volume of poems by Walasse Ting. Visitors to Roy Lichtenstein: Pop remix have the rare opportunity to view sections of this significant publication, in which Ting’s ‘raunchy Pidgin English’[1] is united with the work of key artists including Joan Mitchell, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg. Ting, a Chinese-American poet, printer and painter, produced several illustrated portfolios over the […]

In memory of Robert Hughes, 1938 – 2012

August 8, 2012 by tylercollection

The International Print collection at the National Gallery of Australia has a special, historic connection to Robert Hughes. In 1973 – almost a decade before the Gallery opened its doors to the public – Hughes alerted then director James Mollison to the fact that master-printer Kenneth Tyler was looking to sell his collection of printers’ proofs. Tyler, who set up the Gemini GEL workshop in Los Angeles, had decided to move to the east coast and was looking for a […]

Remembering Maurice Sendak

May 11, 2012 by tylercollection

Ken Tyler shares his memories of friend and collaborator, Maurice Sendak: I was not exposed to Maurice’s books as a young person, but fortunately as an adult I read his books and knew him as a friend.  His unique imagination, wit and humor enlightened all those he touched with his art and friendship. He was the epitome of the irascible and loving relative whose stories taught and amused you.  Knowing Maurice was very special.  Collaborating with him on his prints […]

Maurice Sendak, 1928 – 2012

May 9, 2012 by tylercollection

The much-loved children’s book author and artist, Maurice Sendak, passed away yesterday, May 8, in Danbury, Connecticut. Sendak’s books – with their vivid, fantastical illustrations – have inspired a love of reading in generations of children who were at once terrified and delighted by the raucous adventures of his characters. Below is a discussion of Sendak’s collaboration with Kenneth Tyler, taken from an article written by Marabeth Cohen-Tyler in 2006. You can access the full version on our website here. […]

The quintessence of art collaboration: Richard Hamilton at Tyler Graphics Ltd.

September 26, 2011 by tylercollection

British Pop artist Richard Hamilton died earlier this month, aged eighty-nine. In a career that spanned many decades Hamilton developed his irreverent style in a range of media. He worked with Ken Tyler at Tyler Graphics Ltd. on a series of prints in 1976. To commemorate the life of this legendary artist we asked Ken to reflect on the time he spent working with Richard. His comments are below: “The quintessence of art collaboration was working with Richard Hamilton. Richard arrived at […]

ARTIST IN FOCUS: Per Inge Bjørlo

June 24, 2011 by Tyler Collection

The Kenneth Tyler Printmaking Collection contains prints made by seventy seven artists. Today we are taking a closer look at the work of Norwegian artist Per Inge Bjørlo. Bjørlo collaborated with Ken Tyler on several projects during the mid to late 90s, producing the series Heads from Balance and several other prints. Like much of his oeuvre – which includes painting, sculpture and installation – the work produced at Tyler Graphics Ltd. investigates the workings of the human psyche. Executed […]
